So 2 nights ago after recording the latest episode of the podcast; I pulled an all nighter and replaced the pcv system on my Volvo v70r. Giant pain in the ass, but what ever. Had to be done, old system had a crack and I was slowly leaking oil.
(Sorry for bad potato night pictures)
You can just see the burst pipe I though was the problem in about the middle of the picture, in between the “u” of the larger hose
Yesterday after driving the car about 50 miles my wife calls me and is stranded on the side of the road, with steam coming out of the hood.
I took a look at the car. As best as I can tell the fan stopped working, a radiator hose burst. Ok cool not a huge issue, 60 bucks new fan and new hose.
after putting in the new hose last night, and filling the car with coolant. I went to start it this morning. It will crank. It’s really trying to start but won’t caught. So I look over the car and I see it’s draining fluid from the back of the engine... Not good.
No hoses back there I’m aware of.. I pull off a couple of heat Shields and I see the highest point with coolant on it is the exhaust manifold...
I’m thinking head gasket what does the oppositelock hive mind think

Where are your heater hoses? If one of them gave way, it could definitely be in that area. It’s hard for a head gasket to put antifreeze *up* onto the exhaust manifold on a lot of cars.

hmmm, good point but then why no start? I'll take a poke around tonight, (planning on starting taking apart the engine tonight any way)

I’d check compression. I don’t think compression gauges cost that much, it’s a really useful sort of tool to have, and that will tell you almost immediately. There are all kinds of reasons for something not to start after it’s bathed itself in antifreeze and steam, so I don’t think that’s conclusive.

Volvos often do a crank/no start if the mixture is even slightly off, they like to wash the rings down. It’ll sound like low compression, but if let it sit for a bit it’ll fire right off.
As to cooling system bits, there is a block drain high up on the side of back of the block, as well as turbo cooling lines to look at there, though they don’t fail often. The heater hoses meet the firewall around the turbo, and they have quick-release fittings that can be problematic. I can count the number of head/gasket problems I’ve ever seen on the B52xx series engines on one hand, and all of them were preceded by catastrophic overheats from other cooling system failures. Does your wife remember if it got hot? If you have access to a pressure tester, fill the car with water and pressurize it from the reservoir while inspecting it carefully, from underneath if possible, or with a mirror.

They’re on the driver’s side of the turbo, low on the firewall. They’ll do this if the quick release fittings go.

Yeah it will be a day of sitting when I get home from work tonight (around 9pm) I’ll will with water (don’t have a pressure tester but it does leak fast where ever its leaking from back there) I checked the coolant block drain, that’s fine, not leaking, I took off the first (turbo) shield, no leaks under that. Was in the process of taking off second (exhaust ) heat shield when I had to start getting ready for work. That’s when I peaked and noticed the coolant on the manifold on the furthest left cylinder.(number 5 I think)
It was only at end of the manifold Though.
As for my wife remembering if it got hot, no.
I'm not sure she was paying attention before it started smoking and steaming and she pulled off. I asked what the temp Gauge read as when was on the phone with me just after the incident and she said it was in the middle. But who knows how accurate that is when the car dumped all the coolant at that point
